David's initial career was in the UK drinks industry, working in a variety of roles including purchasing, retailing, marketing and quality control. An increasing specialisation in training led him to join the WSET in 1990. In 1994 he passed the Master of Wine Examination, winning the Listel Award. Following roles on both the teaching and assessment sides of the Trust, in 2003 he was appointed to the new post of International Development Director.
David has judged wine in competitions around the world, and is a non-executive director of the International Wine and Spirit Competition, chairing it’s technical and judging committee. He represents the WSET on the Education and Examination Board of the Institute of Masters of Wine. In 2007 he became a Saké Samurai for his help in educating the UK market about Japanese Saké.
Outside wine, David's enthusiasms lie in walking both the hills and coastline of Britain, partly in an attempt to compensate for his other enjoyment, food and cooking. New books on either topic now have to be smuggled into the house. He has given up trying to find a sport at which he can beat his teenage son.
