WSET Level 1 Award in Wines

The perfect wine course for beginners to start exploring the world of wine.

Course information

This course is an ideal starting point for wine enthusiasts wanting to get to grips with the basics, or those embarking on a career in wine or hospitality. In a short space of time, you’ll find yourself feeling much more confident tasting wine, navigating a wine list, buying bottles and pairing wine with food.

The course will cover:

  • The main types and styles of wine
  • Common wine grapes and their characteristics
  • How to make food and wine pairings
  • Tutored tasting of nine wines (except online courses)
  • How to store and serve wine
  • How to describe wine using the WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)

By the end of the course you’ll be able to taste wine using a globally recognised approach, identify key styles of wine and characteristics of important grape varieties. You’ll also learn the key principles of food and wine pairing and how to apply these to your own food and wine choices.

The Level 1 Award in Wines examination consists of 30 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 45 minutes. To pass you must correctly answer 70% of the questions. Successful students will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin.

This qualification is Ofqual regulated.

No prior wine knowledge is required, just enthusiasm! All our classes are delivered in English therefore a good level of English is beneficial.

You must be at least 18 years old to enrol on any of our courses. 

There is no need to prepare anything before starting your Level 1 Award in Wines course. However anyone embarking on a WSET qualification should familiarise themselves with the qualification specification - this document will help you understand what to expect and what you will get out of the course. 

Study options

At WSET School London we have four study options available for this course. 

Enhanced online course | £135

A four-week online course that works around your schedule. You’ll learn through WSET’s Online Classroom, which allows you to study alongside other wine lovers under the guidance of a dedicated educator. During our School closure due to COVID-19, we are providing you with extra enhancements to your online learning experience. In addition to the standard course content and tutoring, we are now offering you: 

  • Exclusive webinars hosted by WSET School London’s expert educators, including a live interactive food and wine pairing 
  • More question and answer opportunities with our educators 
  • Recordings of the webinars for you to view at your convenience  

A minimum of three hours study per week is recommended to successfully complete the course and regular participation is essential. Tasting is also an important part of this course, and you will need to taste a minimum of six wines (not provided as part of the cost, but you will be given guidance on the styles to taste). 

This course now comes with the ability to sit your examination online, so you don't need to wait or travel to complete your qualification. More details on how online examinations work will be shared with you once you enrol. 

Technology requirements: To use the Online Classroom, we recommend that you use a laptop or desktop device and have a reliable internet connection. To sit your examination online you will also need one additional smart device such as a smartphone or tablet.

The course fee includes a year of access to WSET's Online Classroom, a dedicated online tutor, extra educator-led webinars and your examination (wine samples are not included). 


Day release course | £185

One day, 9.15am-5.00pm
This option allows you to complete the course in just one day, with the exam taking place in the final hour of the day. There are inbuilt recapping and revision exercises throughout the course to help the information sink in.

The course fee includes your workbook (provided at the start of the course), 9 wine samples, 6 hours of tuition and your examination.


Evening course | £185

One evening a week for three weeks, 6.30pm-8.30pm
You’ll study one evening per week for three weeks, with the examination taking place on the final evening. A popular option for those working locally or within easy reach of London Bridge.

The course fee includes your workbook (provided at the start of the course), 9 wine samples, 6 hours of tuition and your examination.  


Saturday course | £185

Two consecutive Saturdays, 10.30am-2.00pm
This course is split over two consecutive Saturdays, with the examination taking place at the end of the second Saturday. A sociable study option, popular with those who want to explore the local area after class.

The course fee includes your workbook (provided at the start of the course), 9 wine samples, 6 hours of tuition and your examination.
