Bartender
Bartenders serve drinks at bars, clubs and other licensed premises. It sounds pretty simple: take orders, prepare drinks and hand them out. However, elite bartenders do so much more than that.
Responsibilities
At the world’s best bars, the bartenders create bespoke cocktails that dazzle guests with their innovative flavour combinations. They deliver world-class service, bringing a unique sense of theatre and flair to the role. These bartenders are often referred to as mixologists, and they often display a similar level of artistry and invention to Michelin-starred chefs.
Skills
Elite bartenders travel the world to compete in cocktail competitions, and they serve as guest bartenders at iconic events. Some work with renowned chefs on food and cocktail pairings. Yet it’s not all glitz and glamour. The role requires speed, efficiency, stamina and focus, especially in high-volume environments. They also have to deliver superb customer service, while fostering a culture of responsible drinking.
Career Progression
Many bartenders start out at modest establishments and then work their way up to the world’s best bars. Spirits qualifications can be beneficial, such as a WSET Level 1 or Level 2 in Spirits, while many brands run workshops too.
This career can take you to five-star hotels, world-class restaurants, cruise ships, luxury resorts and private events, and you can also branch out into brand ambassadorship, consulting, training or writing, so there are lots of exciting opportunities for bartender progression.
