Retail Store Manager
A store manager oversees the day-to-day operations at a wine, beer or spirits shop. It could be a boutique store in a small village, a fine wine merchant in a major city centre or perhaps one of many stores in a large chain.
Responsibilities
You will recruit workers, train staff, oversee rotas and lead the team. Store managers also order drinks, manage inventory, make the store look inviting, plan promotions and events, handle budgets and try to hit sales targets. The manager is responsible for delivering impeccable customer service, building up relationships with important clients and handling any complaints.
Skills and Development
Store managers often emerge as local tastemakers, as people trust their advice. The role suits organised people with strong leadership skills and commercial savvy, but it’s also important to have excellent knowledge.
Many store managers hold a WSET Level 3 or Level 4 award, while they also complete retail management courses. They can progress to area manager, regional manager or even managing director, while many managers eventually open their own stores.
