Retail Store Worker
Thousands of passionate wine, beer, spirits and sake enthusiasts work in the drinks retailing industry. This vast sector covers independent wine merchants, craft beer stores, specialist spirits shops, large chains, cellar door retailers and much more. Many supermarkets also hire wine specialists, while online retailing continues to go from strength to strength.
Responsibilities
It’s a fast-paced, varied role, which encompasses lots of tasks. You will spend a lot of time helping customers choose wines, beers, spirits and sakes, while educating them about flavour profiles and food pairings. Retail workers also need to help unpack deliveries, stack shelves, process sales and fulfil online and phone orders, while hosting in-store tastings, welcoming visiting winemakers and engaging with the local community.
Skills and Development
Working at a retail store is a great way to get into the drinks industry. Drinks retailing can also develop into a highly rewarding, long-term career. You do not necessarily need qualifications to land a job at a retailer, but holding a WSET Level 1 or 2 Award in Wines or Spirits can set you apart from other applicants.
