Vineyard manager

Vineyard Manager

A vineyard manager oversees the day-to-day operations and logistics of a vineyard. This is a hands-on role, which requires deep agricultural knowledge, leadership skills and a deep understanding of vine health.

Responsibilities

While viticulturists make strategic decisions about grape growing, the vineyard manager is tasked with ensuring that the plan is carried out effectively. This requires meticulous planning, staff supervision and problem solving. You will often need to adapt quickly to changing weather patterns and other challenges, so it suits individuals that can thrive under pressure.

Skills

Vineyard management can be an ideal job for someone that enjoys working outdoors. You might start out as a vineyard worker and then progress to a supervisory role, while learning the craft on the job. However, many leading vineyard managers hold relevant degrees or diplomas in viticulture or agriculture. A WSET Level 3 Award in Wines or a WSET Level 4 Diploma can also prove valuable.

Vineyard managers need to know how to operate machinery. They often require health and safety certificates too, while management qualifications are useful.

Career Progression

If you excel, you could progress to managing multiple sites or working as a consultant for multiple wineries. Some vineyard managers also transition to the role of viticulturist or even winemaking.
