Buyer

Buyer

A buyer is responsible for sourcing a diverse range of drinks on behalf of a business, such as a supermarket, a wine merchant or a hotel chain. Buyers aim to build a range that appeals to existing customers, but they also need to attract new customers. The portfolio should stand out from the competition, while offering a strong blend of quality and value.

Responsibilities

Travelling the world, tasting interesting drinks and meeting passionate producers is the most glamorous part of the job. However, buyers typically spend more time poring over spreadsheets than sipping drinks. They must stay on top of consumer trends, evaluate market data, forecast demand and track sales.

Skills Required

Buyers need to master a broad array of skills. They spend a great deal of time tasting and evaluating wines, spirits or beers, so a sharp palate is vital. A deep understanding of the category can also be invaluable. Many leading buyers hold WSET qualifications. For example, wine buyers often hold a Level 3 Award in Wines or a Level 4 Diploma in Wines. That will develop their tasting skills to an expert level and arm them with specialist knowledge.

Buyers focus on pricing and margins, so strong commercial awareness is crucial for anyone considering this drinks industry career. Other key skills include tenacity, negotiation and the ability to communicate clearly. Buyers must agree prices and contracts with suppliers, but they also need to train and motivate the sales team.

Career Progression

You might begin your career as an assistant buyer, or perhaps as a wine advisor. There is a clear path for progression, as you can advance to roles like senior buyer, category manager, head of buying or beverage director.
