At WSET, we believe that the quality of our courses starts with the quality of our educators. To support their ongoing development, we’ve launched a new regional upskilling initiative that connects educators across different markets and gives them first-hand insight into key wine regions around the world.

Curious about how WSET can enhance your team's knowledge of beer, sake, spirits and wine? Check out our customer success stories.

This new webinar series supplements our Continued Educator Development (CED) Programme, educator study trips and specialist workshops, but with a specific focus on cross-border learning and collaboration. Each webinar pairs an expert from one wine region with educators from another, supported by a curated wine selection so participants can experience the quality and diversity of the region’s wines first-hand.

We launched the first series in November 2025 with two partner countries, Germany and Spain, thanks to the support of the Deutsches Weininstitut and the Xunta de Galicia.

  • Spanish-based educators explored German wine in a session presented by Florian Koch, Head of Education and Training at Wines of Germany.
  • German educators discovered the diversity of Galicia with Jorge Vila DipWSET, Director of the Galicia Wine Academy and author of the Galician Wine Specialist course.

More than 150 educators joined the first two sessions.

“We found the webinar very useful… I truly believe that replicating these initiatives more regularly would be a fantastic idea, excellent for engagement, client retention and also a strong tool to promote WSET to a broader audience, not to talk about a great upskill to our team.” Miguel Ángel Hernandez, Director Técnico More Than Wines, Spain.

“The presentation was very interesting and easy to listen to; we all learned a lot of new information and set everything else in context. We would very much enjoy another round of webinars in this format.” Elisabeth Neumüller, Wine Academy Hamburg, Germany.

What the educators tasted in the German wine session

Florian selected six wines that highlight Germany’s stylistic breadth, from traditional Sekt to innovative expressions of classic varieties.

  • 2020 Pinot Noir Prestige Brut Nature, Griesel and Compagnie, Deutscher Sekt (Hessische Bergstraße)
  • 2022 Riesling Maximin Herrenberg Kabinett feinherb, Carl Loewen (Mosel)
  • 2023 Silvaner Eigenart trocken, Max Müller I (Franken)
  • 2022 Weißburgunder Niersteiner Hölle trocken, Weingut Gröhl (Rheinhessen)
  • 2016 Riesling Hochheimer Herrnberg VDP Erste Lage trocken, Weingut Künstler (Rheingau)
  • 2021 Spätburgunder Dernauer Schieferlay – Ritter trocken, Weingut Sermann (Ahr)

The selection of wines in the Galicia session

Jorge’s selection showcased the diversity and high-quality potential found across Galicia’s five Denominaciones de Origen (DOs).

  • Zárate Tras da Viña 2022, D O Rías Baixas
  • Forjas del Salnés Finca Genoveva Caíño 2020, D O Rías Baixas
  • Luis Anxo Rodríguez Viña de Martín Escolma 2020, D O Ribeiro
  • Rafael Palacios As Sortes 2022, D O Valdeorras
  • Guímaro Finca Pombeiras 2022, D O Ribeira Sacra
  • Quinta da Muradella Gorvia Tinto 2019, D O Monterrei

Following the positive response to these first two sessions, further Galicia-focused sessions will take place in early 2026 for educators in Brazil and the Benelux, with additional partnerships and regions planned for later in the year.

This initiative forms part of our wider commitment to ensuring that WSET educators remain informed, inspired and connected to the global drinks landscape, ultimately enhancing the learning experience for every WSET student.

The WSET team at our Head office in London joined the webinars too!
